Summer and wool might seem to be two antithetical concepts, two divergent words… but when we talk about a tailored suit and trousers, these two words combined perfectly portray male elegance .
In fact, some people mistakenly think that Tasmanian wool is a fabric unsuitable for warm temperatures, attributing it to the winter classification.
Nothing could be more wrong.
Virgin wool is a versatile fabric and is also perfect for summer.
Why?
For its characteristics.
Characteristics of Tasmanian wool
In fact, wool is known for its softness, elasticity, hygroscopicity and thermal insulation.
But let's understand better what they are.
- Hygroscopicity : the ability to absorb and retain external water molecules (humidity) up to 30% of its weight without giving the sensation of wetness;
- Flexibility : natural elasticity that allows it to be subjected to strong stretching and twisting and to completely recover its original shape, making it crease-proof;
- Antistatic : it has a low capacity to charge with static electricity, therefore it offers the advantage of not attracting and collecting dust;
- Thermal insulation : it is an excellent thermal insulator, both against the cold and against the heat. Being composed of keratin, a substance similar to that of hair, wool has a very high insulating property, thanks to the air cushion formed by the undulations of its fibers.
Fashion and Tasmania: the nomenclature
High quality pure virgin wool is also defined by the fineness of the yarn and in fact the numbers “S” indicate the fineness of the fibres used to create the fabric and explain its purpose and value.
This is a measurement system that derives from the English Bradford table. In general, the range of fineness of wool varies between 100's and 150's : the higher the number, the lighter, softer and more valuable the fabric will be.
The scale of values was determined by those who worked the cloth in the city of Bradford: they examined the wool by estimating how many skeins of 560 yards of yarn each could be obtained from one pound (453 gr.) of raw worsted of that given fineness .
In essence, the thinner the thread, i.e. with a lower micron, the higher quality the fabric.
This is because if you use a thin thread to weave a square meter of fabric, you need to make more “beats” of the loom, and therefore consume more thread: this is why the price also increases proportionally to the thinness of the thread.
A pair of trousers in 150's virgin wool is therefore the maximum example of elegance and quality in the sartorial field.
Virum 's SS20 collection features a lot of Tasmania 150's trousers.
